Iyengar Yoga & Art Retreat in Kangaroo Valley

with Suzi Chin Iyengar Yoga Teacher
& Rebecca Baird Artist & Printmaker.

Update May 26, 2020

Due to the recent restrictions we had to cancel the May retreat, however we are looking to run the retreat once restrictions are lifted. We would anticipate this to be towards the end of the year, hopefully in late spring.

Also, those who originally signed up for the May retreat we receive a pre-release opportunity before we announce the new dates.

We hope you are keeping well during these times.

BKS Iyengar always described Yoga as an Art.

Over my yoga life and professional careers as an Iyengar Yoga teacher and graphic designer I definitely agree that yoga is a creative process that feeds creative thinking hugely. After yoga practice, our minds and bodies start to reshape. New pathways are opened by the very means of exploring asana and this renews our physical and mental processes. Opening to other ways of seeing, feeling and intuiting.

Yoga also smooths out excessiveness, and helps free us of our, sometimes, self imposed limitations. It’s the possibility of all kinds of abilities we start to discover and realise about ourselves.

There is no one way through, except to go through a process of practice.
On retreats we get time, space and conducive surroundings to hold us as we launch into another way of being.

On this retreat, myself and artist Rebecca Baird are collaborating to offer a dual creative experience, in Yoga and Art. Rebecca’s passion is printmaking which she has developed for over 30 years. She has tutored many courses and classes in Sydney’s Warringah Printmakers Studio and Pine St Creative Arts Centre in inner city Sydney. She is also a long time yoga practitioner for over 35 years.

One might say, well… I can’t draw or I have no interest in making any thing artistic, and this is like yoga in the beginning. We see that it’s got something for us and we know at the least if we just start, we can know something else.

This collaboration of Yoga & Art is an opportunity to explore new pathways of creativity.

We hope you’ll join us!

The Yoga
We start on Friday afternoon for an ‘arrival’ asana class, then get together after for dinner. Saturday & Sunday start with an early morning sitting meditation then a two hour asana class.

The yoga classes are held in a purpose built ‘Iyengar’ yoga studio complete with wall ropes and all the supplies you need, or you might like to bring your own mat.
The room is airy and has heating for the cooler mornings.

In the afternoon on Saturday, there is another asana class. Sunday AM is the same as Saturday except we finish after lunch with a final yoga ‘debrief’ class.

The retreat welcomes everyone with some yoga experience, and a desire to work and explore. Modifications are made for any injuries and or physical limitations.

The Art

Make space to have an opportunity to explore your inner self using the tools of the Visual Art practice. This hands on course over the weekend is designed to introduce different mark making techniques. It is an inclusive art practice experience that welcomes new people to the arts as well as people who have experiences in the visual Arts.

You don’t need to have any other practical visual arts experience and if you are familiar with your own Art practice, this weekend will develop your creative process to new dimensions. From your original drawn line and forms we will move beyond the paper to create relief blocks to make a small edition of prints. This will be with the use of some specialised equipment and materials supplied.

Explore the spaces between, whether this be the physical place or a thought in your mind; it could be a shaft of light between two trees in the landscape. We will begin with simple drawing exercises to build a composition whether it be still life or perspective in the landscape or abstracted shape. Using our original drawn line and forms created in this drawing process we will move beyond the paper to create relief blocks to make a small edition of prints. This will be with the use of specialised equipment and materials.

Making a small edition of prints moves the artist beyond the initial intention to a place where the process of Printmaking takes on a life of its own.

Self-realisation through art is a way, its own journey. To spend time with other likeminded people in a creative supported environment purposely designed to facilitate a creative self-expression.
